Loren P. Woods

Loren Paul Woods (born 1914, died 1979) was an American ichthyologist and museum curator at the Field Museum of Natural History In Chicago. He joined the museum's education department as a guide lecturer in 1938. In 1941, he was transferred to the Department of Fishes, from where he retired in 1978. His career was interrupted by a four-year period of duty with the United States Navy during World War II.[1] While he was in the navy Marion Griswold Grey served as the unpaid curator, becoming an associate at the museum when Woods resumed his post.[2] During his time at the Field Museum he established large and important collections of specimens of freshwater fishes collected in North America and marine fishes found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.[3]

Legacy

As a mark of their respect Woods fellow ichthyologists honoured him with eponyms in the specific names given to new species being described. These included the swallowtail bass (Anthias woodsi), Woods's chromis (Chromis woodsi), Woods's clingfish (Gobiesox woodsi) and the whitespot soldierfish (Myripristis woodsi).[6]

Personal life

Woods was married to Geraldine C. Ellis (known as Geri) and the couple had two children, Kathleen and Michael. Geri died in 2011.[7]
