Background and composition

Calboy explained in an interview with HipHopDX that when he and Pop Smoke were working on "100k on a Coupe", and people started listening to it, everyone recognized the song would be a potential hit: "Everybody in the studio singing it. Everybody saying 'It's hit, bro'."[1] The song was written by Pop Smoke, known as Bashar Jackson, alongside Calboy who has the real name of Calvin Woods, Andre Loblack, and Jayon Raschad, while BlackXipher solely handled the production and programming. Colin Leonard mastered the song while Corey Nutile was credited as the recording engineer. Fabian Marasciullo mixed the song, while Thomas McLaren was credited as an assistant mixer.[2] "100k on a Coupe" was released as a standalone single for digital download and streaming by Victor Victor Worldwide and Republic Records in various countries on December 13, 2019.[3]

Music journalists described the song as an uptempo drill track that features percussion.[3][4] Pop Smoke raps the verse while Calboy raps the chorus of the song.[3][4] Ryan Shepard of Def Pen stated that Pop Smoke raps, "Look, be on my tail, like peanut butter/Windows is tinted, can't see nothin'/I'm strapped with a laser if he want it (Yeah)/Put a Glock on your head, you a phenom (Hey)/And I got a hundred round drum, don't get caught," while Calboy adds, "Hunnid thousand on the coupe, yeah, yeah/I'm with some killers, my niggas'll load up and shoot, yeah, yeah/I’m still havin' fights with some demons, don't know what to do."[5]

Reception and usage in media

Writing for HotNewHipHop, Mitch Findlay opined that it is "difficult" to deem "100k on a Coupe" as a proper followup to "Welcome to the Party", as he said it feels "more like a freestyle than a full-fledged track", but stated that it is still "cool to hear some new music from Smoke, who continues to impress with his Grime-inspired flow and distinctive cadence". He continued, saying to "look for this one to go off if and when its played at high volumes".[4] Courtney Wynter of GRM Daily said that the song sees "Calboy provide a catchy hook [on] either side of Pop Smoke's verse, resulting in yet another anthem for the Brooklyn native".[3] "100k on a Coupe" was added to Grand Theft Auto V and its online counterpart Grand Theft Auto Online in December 2019.[6][7]
